Related concept(s) : Sonic waves, resonating standing waves in a tube, beats, sonic intensity, decibel scale.
In this problem, the students are asked to build a Pan flute from a PVC pipe (cut into several sections of different lengths) and a few coins (to plug the tubes). To do this, they have to precisely calculate the length of the tubes necessary to produce the notes requested. Once the students have designed their flutes, they are asked to test various aspects of their instruments, mainly related to frequency, tone and sonic intensity. Designing the instrument and analyzing the sound it produces will allow the students to cover all the concepts related to sound normally studied at the college level, with the exception of the Doppler effect.
